dsc_0427c dsc_0596c dsc_0608c dsc_0664cLast week at Desert Christian was loads of fun! Students participated against each other according to class (senior, junior, sophomore, and freshmen) in friendly competition in an effort to win the most points at the end of the week. Each day was filled was one sort of activity or another, from dressing in class colors to stepping out in full character costumes. On Friday during our pep rally each class defended their peers in a game of dodge ball. After the winning team was decided, the teachers were able to get in on the action by challenging the juniors in our own game of dodge ball (I am still sore)! On Saturday evening our soccer team played against Benson (we won!), we crowned our homecoming king and queen, and we danced the night away back on campus.

I so thoroughly enjoyed watching these students participate in events outside of the classroom this last week, from playing their heart out in soccer to giving their all as good stewards: planning, preparing food and cleaning up all week-long. I say it all the time but I’ll say it again. I love being a part of Desert Christian High School!

Retreat!

dsc_9823cWhat high school takes all of their students on a 3-day retreat off campus for unity, collaboration, worship, guest speakers, activities and games? Desert Christian High School in Tucson, AZ does!

dsc_9749cEach year the whole campus, freshmen-seniors, as well as staff and faculty take off for three days around the backside of Mount Lemmon to the Triangle-Y Camp. Here seniors display their leadership capabilities and take on the responsibility of being mentors and group discussion facilitators, life-long skills that they hone throughout the year and into adulthood. Young men carry young lady’s luggage to separate camp grounds; worship time is, dare I say, better than church, and lead by students; small group breakout discussion times work themselves into deep discussions about life and how to embody a Christian spirit; activities challenge their mind, body and soul; and teamwork is displayed in terms of friendly, but determined home room competitions. dsc_9745cThe culmination of three days of reflection, confiding, consulting, playing, eating and worship is a bonfire under the stars, modern Christian songs sung in a cappella, and words of wisdom given by seniors and modeled by the entire student body.

There’s no place like Desert Christian my friends, no place at all. THIS is where you want your children to be educated, to be dsc_9693cnurtured, to learn the skills they’ll need to be successful adults in a changing modern world.

Busy, Busy, BUSY!

I am so very excited to announce that I have been asked to be the new US History, Psychology and Mock Trial teacher at Desert Christian High School in Tucson, AZ! This summer I have been busy building curriculum for these classes, and as a new teacher, that means starting from scratch. While having three new preps to build can be a bit overwhelming, I am finding that it is not “work.” The study of history and social sciences is near and dear to my heart; how blessed am I to have the opportunity to do what I love as a career?

I very much look forward to meeting my 2016/17 students and well as their parents. This year is going to be amazing! I already have field trips, guest speakers and awesome projects planned.

This will be a year of telling stories: the kind that grip you and elicit a wide range of emotions because they are true and personal as citizens of this great nation. timthumb.phpThis will be a year spent in the courtroom, where the great laws of our country are put to the test and the future of American citizens hang in the balance.

This will be a year of personal and societal discovery, where we’ll embrace the aspects of conscious and unconscious thought, marveling at God’s creation of the human being. The sky is the limit and I only have nine months to cram it all in. Get ready for the ride of a lifetime!
